Candeleda

Candeleda is a small town of 5,000 inhabitants, perched at 432m above sea level on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Gredos. Because of its southern exposure and its relative seclusion, it has its own microclimate, of a Mediterranean type. It's next to the Regional Park, an area of outstanding beauty and great biodiversity. In late spring and summer, the melting snows of the Sierra de Gredos feed many streams which run down narrow gorges, forming deliciously cool pools and lovely waterfalls. The area offers horse riding and canoeing, as well  as walking and climbing. There is a golf course nearby. The picturesque old town cenre, with its Romanesque church and vernacular architecture, is an attraction in itself.

Castro Celta

High up on the mountain, this is one of the most important Iron-Age Celtic archaeological sites in the whole Peninsula, the area being the territory of one of the main Celtiberian tribes, the Vettoni.

Gastronomy

The area is famed for its meats (veal, kid, lamb), its  cheeses, and "pimentón", a condiment with its own appellation-contrôlée status.

Excursions

There are many interesting and beautiful places to visit within easy reach, among them the Monasteries of Yuste and Guadalupe, the areas of las Villuercas, the Jerte Valley and the Monfragüe National Park, and the beautiful  towns of Trujillo, Cáceres and Toledo.

The virgen de Chilla Hermitage

A minor road takes you from Candeleda to this hermitage, a traditional place of pilgrimage for the people of the Valle del Tietar, situated at 600m of altitude, by the gorge of the same name, in a small plateau planted with chestnut trees, ashes, and poplars. I has beautiful views over the Tietar valley and beyond. On the second and third Sundays in September, people from all over the region and visitors form other parts flock to the traditional pilgrimage, which ends up in feasting, singing and dancing.

Comarca de la Vera

This region boasts the greatest number of snow-fed  gorges in the whole of Spain, as well as 5 towns which have been declared of protected historic and artistic interest. Il has a wealth of old monuments, beautiful landscape, and a very distinctive and most attractive vernacular architecture.
